FAQs

  • What is the ideal age for my child to start piano lessons?

Every child is unique, but in general most children have the attention span and hand-eye coordination needed for piano lessons by the time they are 7 years old.

  • Do I need special equipment for virtual lessons?

Not really! You’ll need a laptop or tablet that can run video-calling software, and a reliable internet connection. A pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones may also be helpful.

  • Do I have to buy certain music or books?

Nope! We'll take care of that for you. At Black Cat Beats Music School, all music & books are included with your monthly tuition. That means any time you need a new book or piece of music, it will be delivered directly to your mailbox (or inbox).

  • Do I need to have my own piano?

Yes, a piano is required. Acoustic (upright) pianos or electric pianos (keyboards) work equally well. If you are going to use an electric piano, be sure to choose one that has a full keyboard (88 keys), has weighted or semi-weighted keys, and is compatible with a pedal attachment. If you aren’t sure where to begin, we can help you find a quality instrument that works for your family.

  • How do virtual lessons work?

All students receive a studio link. At your appointed lesson time, you simply click the link and will be instantly connected to your teacher. Your teacher will use a combination of music books, sheet music, live demonstration, videos, on-screen notation, virtual flashcards, games, and more! Lesson notes are emailed to the parent every week, and can be accessed any time through the Student Portal.

  • Will my child get to perform in recitals?

Yes! Our school does two recitals per year, in a virtual format that has been popular with both students and parents alike. Virtual recitals are also open to friends and family, so grandparents, aunts, and uncles can see your child's performance just as easily, perhaps even more easily, as an in-person recital. After our live viewing party, the recital video can be viewed at any time on our YouTube channel.
